Q. What is "virtual web hosting"?

A. In order to have a web site on the vast, linked network of computers known as the Internet, a web site must reside on a host computer (World Wide Web server). Virtual Web Hosting gives your web site a home on our web servers and establishes your presence on the Internet. Our servers are always on and connected to the Internet 24/7 and monitored so your site is always active.
A Virtual Domain means having your own domain (http://www.yourname.com) without having to install expensive server hardware and software. With a Virtual Domain, you utilize our server's storage space, however, you are still professionally represented via your own personal Internet web address domain name (www.yourname.com) and by your own personal e-mail address domain name (yourname@yourdomain.com).

Q. Can I access my site with or without the 'www'?

A. Unlike some of our competitors, with our service you can access your site with both (www.yourname.com) and without (yourname.com).

Q. What's the difference between Great Buy Web Hosting and other companies that charge $4.95/mo.?

A. One word: Support . Try calling that other host that charges $4.95/mo., or better yet, try finding a phone number on their site. Sometimes it's just easier to resolve issues over the phone rather than emailing back and forth. There's actually a large hosting company out there (base plan runs $5.95/mo.) that says they don't provide a phone support because they would rather not provide it at all if they can't do it right.

Q. Does it matter which Internet Server Provider I use (e.g. AOL, EarthLink, AT&T, IBM.net, etc...)?

A. Any ISP is fine. As long as you have an Internet connection you will be able to access our servers and your control panel to make updates to your site.

Q. My ISP already gives me some web space, why do I need your services?

A. Your ISP will not give you your own domain, multiple custom email accounts, or any of the other features we offer. Also ISPs who offer web hosting have slow connections because of all of the dial-up users, we do not offer dial-up Internet access for this reason.

Q. Do you host pornographic or hacker sites?

A. NO!! NO!! NO!!

Q. Do you allow me to send mass unsolicited email?

A. NO! Note that sending out a newsletter that people sign up for is acceptable, but unsolicited spamming will not be tolerated and will cause you to lose your services immediately with no refunds.

Q. When you say annually, do you mean pay you all the money up front, or pay monthly for one year?

Q. What is the difference between a domain and a subdomain?

A. A domain is your own personal online web address (www.yourname.com), which you must register with a domain registration service such as GreatBuyDomains.com or through another registar. Registration fees are normally $35.00 a year and up. However, you can now register your domain name through GreatBuyDomains.com for only $10.00 per year.

A Sub-Domain (www.yourname.yourdomainname.com), allows you to have the benefit of a unique name on the Internet without domain name registration fees. Sub-domains receive the same features and benefits as our true virtual domain hosting accounts.

Q. Will I have unlimited access to update my pages?

A. Yes. You have unlimited access via your control panel and/or FTP 24-hours a day. As such, you can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files to your web site at your leisure.

Q. How do I transfer files to my web site?
A. Files may be transferred using your Control Panel (File Manager) or you may transfer files to the web server via File Transport Protocol (FTP). If you need a FTP Program, visit http://home.winarchives.com/workstation/ftp.html or Shareware.com . We recommend CuteFTP or WS_FTP but there are many great programs available.

Q. Can I use my account for commercial purposes?

A. Yes, you can use your account for commercial purposes. The World Wide Web has become the most efficient and cost-effective means of making information available to the users of the Internet community and we encourage our customers to utilize such an enormous medium.

Q. How long does it take to setup a new hosting account?

A. 10 Minutes or less. If paying by money order, your account will be set up as soon as we receive your payment.

Q. Can I upgrade from one plan to another? Is there a fee to upgrade?

A. You can upgrade from one plan to another at anytime via your web-based control panel. There are never any upgrading fees. You only pay the difference between your old account and your new account.

Q. Can I transfer an existing domain name to Great Buy Web Hosting's servers?

A. Yes. Many of our clients have transferred their domains to our servers. We will be happy to assist you in changing your DNS address to our servers. You are not transferring your physical domain to us, just the address.

Q. Can you register my domain name for me? If so, how much does it cost and how long until it's working?

A. Yes, we can register your domain name (.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, or .us) for $10.00/year for up to 10 years at a time. It takes approximately 24-48 hours for the domain name registration to propagate throughout the internet.

Q. Do I have to have my own domain name in order to have a web site hosted with you?

A. Yes. We can register the domain name for you when you sign up, or you can register your domain yourself through GreatBuyDomains.com for only $10 a year.

Q. What is Domain Parking?

A. Parked domain names are domain names that point to an existing domain name. They do not use any disc space they just simply point or "redirect" to an existing domain name.

Q. Can you park a domain for me?

A. If your site is hosted with us, we can park as many domains as you want. There is a one time set up fee of $10.00 but then it's free for as long as you are hosted with us and there are never any monthly fees. Or you can register your domain name at Great Buy Domains and park it for free.

Q. I have been hosting elsewhere but just signed up for hosting with Great Buy Web Hosting. How do I transfer my domain name so that it points to my site on your servers?

A. You will need to modify your Domain Name Server (DNS) record to show our nameservers which are:
